About
My love affair with the Wilson School District started in May of 1997 when I was hired by Wilson right out of Kutztown University. Although I got job offers from other districts, I ultimately chose Wilson because it had the most progressive, child-centered philosophy. (And truth be told... the outlets were pretty close too... I mean, to be fair, I was only 22!)
I taught at Whitfield Elementary for 13 years, teaching my first three years in 6th grade, then spending a (my favorite) year in kindergarten, two years in 2nd grade, and finally spending my last seven years teaching in 1st grade. During my time at Whitfield, I also graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with my masters in Reading/Writing/Literacy and started my doctoral program at Widener University in Reading, from which I graduated in December 2013.
In July 2010, I resigned from Wilson to take a tenure track position as an assistant professor at my undergraduate alma mater, Kutztown University. I teach undergraduate literacy and methodology courses. Getting back to my roots at Kutztown really ignited my interest in running for the Wilson School Board.
I was elected in 2017 and am at the end of my first term. In the four years since I have been on the board, I can say the whole tenor of the district has changed for the better. I sometimes am frustrated because the changes can seem to happen so slowly, but looking back now, the district is a completely different place.
My husband Steve and I met as freshman at KU and have been married since 2001. We have four children, Patrick, 17, at at the high school; Cooper, 15, at the high school; Tanner, 11, at West, and Blakely, 7, Green Valley. We have lived in the district for nearly 25 years now, buying our first home in Lincoln Park and currently residing in Lower Heidelberg Township. Our children are very active in almost all youth sports. Steve has coached basketball, softball, had a short stint as a Van Reed football coach, and is very active as both a coach and board member for Wilson Youth baseball. I help coach Van Reed cheerleading.
